We are a long-established, family-owned company with our headquarters in Hamburg. We have been constantly changing since our foundation in 1953: the small workshop with 30 employees has developed into a global enterprise with over 16,000 employees in just a few decades.
We owe the fact that we have maintained the character of a family-owned business first and foremost to the corporate culture shaped by our founder Dr. Friedrich Jungheinrich. It is, in essence, based on fostering initiatives and performance in our employees — in keeping with his motto “Do it!”. This mentality of active contribution is still found in the company today.
We have set big goals for ourselves, and we achieve those goals with energy and innovation. We offer secure, attractive jobs for dedicated and performance-oriented employees. It’s an exciting time to join us!
We take on social and environmental responsibility by integrating concepts of sustainability into our corporate strategy. This ranges from the efficient handling of resources to the development of energy-saving products and to long-term collaborations with charitable organisations. Within this context, we support two long-term projects:
Aid Organisation action medeor
We began our partnership with action medeor, an organisation based in Tönisvorst near Düsseldorf, in 2012. This medical aid organisation sends more than 17,000 packages with medicinal products and therapeutic nutrition per year and supplies over 10,000 health stations in 140 countries worldwide. Seamless logistics are needed to make this happen, and that is exactly where we can utilise our expertise in the area of intralogistics and bring it together with charitable commitment. We do this within various projects by providing financial donations as well as donating lift trucks. In order to support action medeor financially on a long-term basis, we have established a model for internal donations at Jungheinrich: the so-called Spare Cents Campaign. Here, many employees waive the cents after the decimal in their payroll each month. Jungheinrich AG manages the resulting sums throughout the business year, doubles them at the end of the year and then passes them on to our partner as a donation – including the resulting tax advantage for the company, which can total up to 30% of the donation.
The Children's University of Hamburg
As a long-standing company with its roots in Hamburg, we have contributed to the sponsorship of young people in science and research with the Dr. Friedrich Jungheinrich Foundation for many years. In our opinion, such sponsorship cannot start early enough. To enable early access to education for children, we support the Children’s University of Hamburg and in 2012 we entered into a partnership with the children's magazine GEOlino, the credit insurer Euler Hermes and the ETV Children and Youth Development foundation.
The University of Hamburg and the Claussen-Simon Foundation are partners responsible for the Children's University of Hamburg project. In 2012 the Körber Foundation, whose concept is to provide initial funding, ended their support after ten years. The popular lecture series could be continued thanks to new sponsors, including Jungheinrich. The annual series of events for children between eight and twelve years old is held at the University of Hamburg and provides a child-friendly presentation of different scientific research topics.
Professional and personal life
Creating a family-friendly work environment is important to us. It keeps us motivated and productive in the long term and, in doing so, contributes to the company’s success. Flexible working hours or trust-based working hours, home office and 25 to 30 vacation days per year are part of our work routine in many areas and provide a healthy balance between work and private life. Bridge days and the time between Christmas and New Year’s Day are usually reserved for the family. In these cases, our employees can use their flexible working hours or their vacation days.
Weekends and on-call duties are more likely the exception than the rule in our northern locations.
At our large locations, we also offer the opportunity to make use of our emergency childcare, which could be needed should a day-care centre have an unforeseen closure, for example. Our staff can also make use of our family service, which provides advice on all questions relating to childcare and long-term care of relatives.
In addition, we actively design parental leave in order to give mothers and fathers the opportunity to participate in continuing education programmes and make re-entry easier.
Health care management
The health of our employees is important to us. Be it assistance in overcoming an illness or providing care on-site at the company with the company physician, health manager or an internal social service – we offer numerous ways to improve the well-being of our employees. Health days, non-smoking courses as well as weeks focus on current health topics and are held at some sites.
We create ergonomic workplaces wherever locally possible, for example, through the use of adjustable office desks or notebooks with integrated handles for mobile use of our customer service technicians.
With our wide range of company sports activities, our employees can stay fit while meeting other colleagues. We offer it all – from solo, tandem to group sports: for example, you can participate in badminton, bowling, golf, handball, deep-sea fishing, various jogging circles, cycling, back fitness, sailing, tennis, volleyball and yoga.
A subsidised company restaurant offering a wide selection of delicious and healthy dishes as well as complimentary hot drinks and water top it off. Our goal is to maintain and promote the health, well-being and performance of our employees.
In Germany alone, we employ people from over 40 countries. From school graduates to long-time employees, we pride ourselves on the variety of personalities at Jungheinrich. We place great value on an atmosphere of openness and acceptance, as both our employees and we as a company can benefit from this heterogeneity. Different perspectives lead us to varied and innovative solutions – and thus well-founded, sustainable decisions.
Workplace safety for us means hazard control and the elimination of risks for the safety of our employees, as well as the preventive preservation of health and humane working conditions. Therefore, we rely on the highest security standards. We review these standards regularly, as both working and environmental conditions are constantly changing: faster procedures as well as new tasks and technologies are our daily challenges.
Cooperation with universities
Securing young leaders and specialists is of key importance to us. For this reason, we collaborate with numerous universities such as the TU Hamburg-Harburg, the FH Wedel und the TU Munich. We additionally invest in science, research and education in the fields of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and logistics. As part of this, the Dr. Friedrich Jungheinrich Foundation, founded in 2004, awards grants to young people and promotes various chairs.
