How we are reducing the load on the power grid at Reichenau-Gemüse eG

15,000 tonnes of fresh vegetables and a special challenge: on the UNESCO World Heritage island of Reichenau, energy availability is limited. Together with Reichenau-Gemüse eG, we have developed a solution that increases efficiency and reduces electricity bills.

The situation on the island of Reichenau is special: a limited power grid meets energy-intensive cooling systems for the fresh vegetables. At the same time, industrial trucks need a reliable power supply to move the fresh vegetables quickly. The key question: How can we ensure fast, efficient and smooth operation without overloading the power grid?

Reichenau 1 Our answer consists of two components: 41 industrial trucks with lithium-ion technology and active load management. The lithium-ion batteries in our vehicles - from order pickers to forklift trucks - enable flexible intermediate charging and are significantly more energy-efficient on the road than vehicles with lead-acid batteries. Active load management optimally complements this efficiency: it intelligently distributes the available energy throughout the entire system. Vehicles with a low battery level receive the full charging power, while the power is reduced when the batteries are well filled. The limited energy therefore flows precisely to where it is most urgently needed.

Reichenau 2 Measurable success for the customer

The effect of this combined solution can also be seen directly on the electricity bill. ‘I was particularly pleased when I first looked at the energy supplier's bill - when I saw that it was working,’ reports Johannes Bliestle, Managing Director of Reichenau-Gemüse. The lower energy costs confirm this: Sustainability and profitability go hand in hand here. The success of the project is also based on our long-standing partnership with Reichenau-Gemüse. ‘The cooperation with Jungheinrich is valuable to us because it is based on a high level of expertise and we have been working together in a spirit of trust for decades,’ emphasises Johannes Bliestle.

The project at Reichenau shows how limited resources can be optimally utilised through intelligent technology. With the combination of lithium-ion technology and active load management, we have realised a solution that combines energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness and reliability - and how modern material handling contributes to greater sustainability.
