From emergency aid to prevention: our annual donation supports healthcare projects in the Congo

Health is the foundation for a self-determined life. That is why Jungheinrich, in partnership with action medeor, supports projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that help people in acute crisis situations whilst also strengthening local healthcare provision in the long term.

Key insights

  • Together with action medeor, Jungheinrich has been committed to improving healthcare in crisis-hit and developing regions for many years.
  • Our annual donation supports both efforts to tackle acute health crises and the strengthening of local healthcare structures in the Congo.
  • Healthcare opens up new opportunities. It enables people to lead self-determined lives and to participate in society.

An action medor staff member is standing next to boxes labelled “Ebola emergency aid”. A healthy life creates the conditions for education, work and participation in society. Nevertheless, millions of people worldwide lack reliable access to medical care. This makes initiatives that provide support where help is most urgently needed all the more important. That is why Jungheinrich is once again supporting the work of the aid organisation action medeor this year with a corporate donation. The funds go towards projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that both respond to acute health crises and strengthen the resilience of local healthcare structures in the long term.

Through this commitment, we are also contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our partnership with action medeor contributes in particular to Goal 3, ‘Good Health and Well-being’, which focuses on access to healthcare and the promotion of well-being worldwide.

What does action medeor do?

As the ‘world’s emergency pharmacy’, action medeor has been working for more than 60 years to provide people in crisis-hit regions and countries with weak health systems with access to medicines, medical equipment and healthcare. The organisation provides emergency aid worldwide in disaster and crisis situations, whilst also supporting the long-term development of sustainable health infrastructure.

In the east of the country, action medeor is currently involved in the fight against an Ebola outbreak. The organisation supports measures designed to curb the further spread of the disease. These include contact tracing, awareness-raising in the affected communities and the expansion of water and sanitation facilities.
Such measures can play a crucial role in breaking chains of infection at an early stage and containing the spread of the disease. Through our support, we at Jungheinrich are helping to make this vital work on the ground possible.

Strengthening healthcare sustainably

Another portion of the donation will benefit a healthcare project in South Kivu province. The region is characterised by poverty, conflict and the consequences of recurring natural disasters. Floods, in particular, regularly worsen living conditions for the population and increase the risk of disease outbreaks.

To improve healthcare provision in the region in the long term, healthcare facilities are being supplied with medicines and medical equipment. At the same time, hygiene and sanitation measures are being expanded to prevent diseases and better protect people from future health crises.

Taking responsibility together

Jungheinrich and action medeor share a long-standing partnership. Jungheinrich has been supporting the organisation in its work in crisis and developing regions worldwide since 2012. We highlighted the diverse nature of this collaboration in the blog post “How our Jungheinrich "Donate your Pennies" campaign is supporting two health projects in Tanzania and Syria”. In it, we report, amongst other things, on a forklift donation for a medicines warehouse in Tanzania and other projects aimed at improving healthcare provision. Together, we are committed to ensuring access to medical care and strengthening local healthcare structures.

With this year’s corporate donation, we are continuing our long-standing commitment. Because we are convinced that social responsibility means not only responding to acute emergencies, but also promoting sustainable development.
