Sustainable production at Jungheinrich: Lars Planko on the how and why

What does sustainable production actually look like at Jungheinrich? Why is it so important, and what added value does it bring to us and our customers? Our Senior Vice President Operations, Lars Planko, answers these questions in three short video responses.

Sustainable production is no longer just a trend, but crucial to the future of industry. At Jungheinrich, we see it not as an end in itself, but as a clear competitive advantage. Because if you want to be successful in the long term, you have to act today – ecologically, socially and economically.

Sustainability is practised every day in our factories. Production is a place where we can bring about direct change: from energy consumption and material use to working conditions. Why go to all this effort? Quite simply because sustainability pays off. Lower energy consumption means lower costs, optimised processes increase productivity, and responsible behaviour builds trust among our customers. This is how we combine ecological responsibility with economic success.

Measures for greater energy efficiency and climate protection in production

To reduce CO₂ and conserve resources, we are implementing a variety of concrete measures – from simple everyday optimisations to major investments. These include, for example:

  • Shutting down compressed air systems at weekends and optimising ventilation systems for greater energy efficiency in everyday use
  • The use of LED lighting and intelligent control systems to reduce energy consumption
  • Expanding photovoltaic systems at our sites in Degernpoint, Landsberg and Quingpu to utilise renewable energies
  • Using heat pumps and infrared radiators for CO₂-neutral heating systems

All these measures contribute to a clear goal: climate-friendly, energy-efficient and sustainable production.

But for us, sustainability does not end with ecological improvements. We also take social responsibility – for the safety, health and development of our employees. Our goal: Vision Zero with zero accidents and an average health rate of over 95 per cent. To achieve this, we invest in prevention, training and active health management. The success is reflected in the figures: the accident rate is falling continuously, with locations such as Chomutov and Moosburg already achieving top marks.

Lars Planko on sustainable production

As Senior Vice President Operations, Lars Planko is responsible for all production sites worldwide and plays a decisive role in shaping our strategy for sustainable manufacturing. In the following videos, he talks about how we integrate sustainability into our production processes – and why this approach pays off for us and our customers in the long term.

Sustainable production at Jungheinrich is not a goal, but a path with a clear direction. We want to show that profitability, innovation and responsibility are not contradictory, but reinforce each other. In this way, we are shaping the future of sustainable industry together – step by step, plant by plant.
