Jungheinrich to automate a packaging warehouse for Coppenrath & Wiese using MOVU shuttle technology

As a system integrator, Jungheinrich is installing a state-of-the-art automated warehouse for packaging materials for Conditorei Coppenrath & Wiese at its headquarters in Mettingen.

  • High-bay warehouse with around 2,900 rack storage locations for pallets for centralised packaging materials logistics
  • Multi-depth storage with eight MOVU atlas pallet shuttles for maximum space utilisation
  • Fully integrated systems from a single source: racking technology, conveyor systems, shuttle systems and a warehouse control system

Hamburg – Conditorei Coppenrath & Wiese KG has commissioned Jungheinrich to install a fully automated warehouse for packaging materials at its Mettingen site. The project involves merging previously decentralised warehouse areas into a centralised, automated facility, which will considerably increase the efficiency of in-house logistics processes. As a general contractor, Jungheinrich will deliver a turnkey solution comprising shelving, conveyor systems, MOVU atlas pallet shuttles and a warehouse control system.

Centralised automation with smart shuttle technology

The new high-bay warehouse spans two hall sections, each with different heights of 11.66 metres and 12.76 metres. A total of 2,916 rack storage locations for pallets will be built in multi-depth storage. Eight MOVU atlas pallet shuttles will be in automated operation 24/7, stacking and picking Euro and industrial pallets weighing up to 1,000 kilograms, along with plastic and stainless steel containers weighing up to 1,250 kilograms, which are to be transported between different areas and levels of the building.

The shuttles move through the shelving at speeds of up to 1.4 m/s and an acceleration of 0.4 m/s². Thanks to their compact design featuring two independent wheel sets, they can navigate narrow storage channels precisely and safely. A broad temperature range of -25°C to +45° means the system is highly versatile.

Maximum space utilisation thanks to smart warehouse design

By eliminating driving aisles, the MOVU atlas system facilitates an increase in space utilisation of over 50 per cent compared to conventional warehouse systems. “This solution allows us to lay the groundwork for even more efficient and automated packaging logistics – all within the existing building structure,” explains Tobias Lesting, Engineering project manager at Coppenrath & Wiese. “Jungheinrich impressed us with its combination of experience and expertise in hardware and software, as well as its ability to integrate the MOVU system perfectly into our processes.”

Seamless system integration through the use of smart software

The MOVU Warehouse Execution System (WES) coordinates all warehouse and transport processes in real time. The software components work together across three control levels: MOVU ops receives orders from the upstream warehouse management system and converts them into specific transport tasks. MOVU tower selects the most optimally positioned shuttle, determines the most efficient routes and monitors all activities in real time. MOVU pilot handles the precise steering of each individual shuttle – from starting the engines to controlling the speed. The modular system can be expanded and adapted flexibly to meet future requirements.

“As an experienced system integrator, Jungheinrich combines all of the different components of automation, from conveyor systems and software integration to service and support. This is what creates added value for our customers: a seamlessly connected overall system that combines performance, transparency and scalability,” says Claus Bode, Technical Sales project manager at Jungheinrich. “Integrating the MOVU atlas system allows us to combine high warehouse density with maximum dynamics. This solution makes optimal use of the available space, while also laying the foundation for future growth.”

In addition to shelving comprising 2,916 rack storage locations for pallets, platforms, stairs and safety equipment, the Jungheinrich scope of delivery also includes eight MOVU atlas pallet shuttles with MOVU tower software, lifts and pallet conveyor systems, as well as the warehouse management system (MOVU ops). Jungheinrich also assumes the after-sales service.

Operation of the warehouse is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
