With the automation of its new very narrow aisle warehouse in Lüneburg, Hiller Logistik GmbH is responding to particularly high fire protection requirements and increasing efficiency demands.
Hamburg – Hiller Logistik GmbH, a renowned logistics service provider based in Lüneburg, has commissioned Jungheinrich to automate its new very narrow aisle warehouse. The project addresses several challenges at once: strict fire safety regulations, heightened safety standards, and the company’s goal of sustainably increasing the efficiency of its material handling processes.
Mobile robots for maximum availability
The logistical backbone of the facility consists of four EKX 516a mobile robots, which handle storage and retrieval operations across ten aisles, each 67 metres long and 12.9 metres high. This creates an exceptionally high storage density within a comparatively compact area. A combined energy system featuring automatic PzS battery charging and conductor rails ensures continuous operation five days a week, with up to 16 hours of deployment per day.
The warehouse is designed to accommodate various types of load carriers from Euro and industrial pallets to CP pallets and boxes. Connection to the warehouse system is achieved via modern conveyor technology with integrated contour checking stations and a transfer car system for cross-aisle transport.
Comprehensive solution from a single source
As general contractor, Jungheinrich is delivering the complete automation package: in addition to the four EKX 516a mobile robots, the scope of supply includes the entire racking system, conveyor technology with contour control, the Warehouse Control System (WCS), and process visualisation (PMI). This holistic approach ensures that all system components are perfectly aligned and operate seamlessly together.
“For us, it was crucial to work with a partner who not only provides technology but also offers comprehensive consultancy and support throughout the entire process. With Jungheinrich, we have found the best solution for our specific requirements,” says Rafael Pappert, Managing Director of Hiller Logistik GmbH.
“With a storage height of 12.9 metres, we are creating a very high storage density for Hiller on a small footprint. Combined with the outstanding availability and performance of our EKX 516a mobile robots, this results in a particularly powerful and efficient solution for the new very narrow aisle warehouse,” adds Felix Salm, Senior Project Manager Mobile Robots at Jungheinrich.
The new warehouse will be connected to the customer’s existing system via the Jungheinrich WCS. Commissioning is scheduled for 2026.
